This service does NOT include edits or comments made directly into the manuscript draft.

SECOND READ MANUSCRIPT CRITIQUE

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING TYPE A
Feedback in the form of an extensive editorial letter

Reading fee + $645

This service is also known as an “Extensive Manuscript Critique” (described above). Your editor reads your full manuscript and compiles feedback in an extensive editorial letter, usually ranging from 8-10 single-spaced pages. This editorial letter covers feedback on a range of issues, including any or all of the following: pacing; flow of narrative; transitions; voice; plot; structure; dialogue; character development; audience; potential market. This service does NOT include edits or comments made directly into the manuscript draft.

DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING TYPE B
Extensive feedback in the margins of the manuscript

Payment is based on a sliding scale:
1-15 pages – $0.05/word
16-25 pages – $0.041/word
26-50 pages – $0.033/word
51-75 pages – $0.029/word
76-100 pages – $0.026/word
More than 100 pages – $0.024/word

You send your manuscript and your editor sends it back with extensive comments in the margins plus end notes after each chapter. The comments in the margins are usually specific to that page, whereas the end notes summarize feedback for the whole chapter. This service does NOT include line-edits made directly into the manuscript via track changes.

CONTENT EDITING (A.K.A. "COMPREHENSIVE EDITING")

$0.025 – $0.045/word, depending on how messy or clean the draft is to begin with

With this service, we request a sample in order to quote an exact per-page rate. The reason is that this service can be extraordinarily time-consuming depending on how “messy” the draft is to begin with. Your editor will pore over every sentence in the book, making hundreds (if not thousands) of edits directly into the text to improve the content and style. This service touches on everything from big-picture commentary (character development, plot, structure, pacing, thematic resonance, etc.) to nitty-gritty sentence-level details. Unlike copyediting (which is primarily focused on fixing errors), content editing is inherently subjective and influenced by the style of the particular editor. Edits are made using the Track Changes feature in Microsoft Word.

COPYEDITING

$0.014 – $0.023/word, depending on how messy or clean the draft is to begin with

With this service, we request a sample in order to determine whether you will need standard copy editing or intensive copy editing. Standard copyediting includes corrections for grammar, punctuation, capitalization, verb tense, spelling, sentence structure, awkward phrasing, and word usage errors. Intensive copyediting covers all of the above with an additional focus on style, consistency, clarity, pacing, and dialogue. Edits are made using the Track Changes feature in Microsoft Word.

PROOFREADING

$0.0085 – $0.01/word

Please refer to this article for an explanation of the difference between copyediting and proofreading. Unlike copyediting, proofreading is typically done on a PDF or print-ready file and includes corrections for typos, grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Editor will also check for visual disruptions in the text layout, e.g. widows and awkwardly placed hyphens at the end of a line. Proofreading is intended as a final check; the manuscript should already have been through at least one round of line editing.

The writing coaching process varies by coach. The descriptions below are a suggested starting point. (These descriptions also assume that the client is out of town and must discuss work via phone. If client and editor are both local to the same city, arrangements can be made for in-person meetings in lieu of or in addition to phone calls.)

 MONTHLY COACHING (STANDARD)

Rates vary by editor. Inquire for details.

Client will submit up to 12,000 words per month (either 12,000 words once a month or 6,000 words every two weeks). Work can be a combination of new or revised work based on the feedback/guidance from the previous deadline. For each submission, feedback will be given either in a 1-2 page letter, a 30-minute phone call, or comments in the margins of the draft, with the goal of shaping and strengthening the work for publication.

MONTHLY COACHING (LIGHT)

Rates vary by editor. Inquire for details.

Client will submit up to 6,000 words/month (either 6,000 words once a month or up to 3,000 words every two weeks). Work can be a combination of new or revised work based on the feedback/guidance from the previous deadline. For each submission, feedback will be given either in a 1-2 page letter, a 30-minute phone call, or comments in the margins of the draft, with the goal of shaping and strengthening the work for publication.

HOURLY COACHING (MOST FLEXIBLE MODEL)

Rates vary by editor. Inquire for details.

Client purchases a block of hours (minimum block is 10 hours) to use with Coach. Client may make use of the coach’s time during those hours however he or she prefers, e.g. sending manuscript pages to be marked up with comments, talking on the phone, meeting in person to review work, requesting feedback on a query letter or synopsis, etc. Coach keeps track of all time spent and is responsible for updating client about time spent and time remaining. Hours may be rolled over from month to month but expire one year after purchase date.
